Min Yoon-gi, famously known as Suga, was born on 9 March 1993. He has professionally adopted the names Suga and Agust D, and the same has also been stylized in his caps. Suga is a famous South Korean songwriter, rapper, and record producer. The famous label Big Hit Music manages him, and Suga debuted as a part of the South Korean famous band BTS in the year 2013.

Suga also went ahead to release his solo mix tape in 2016 under the name Agust D. It was again released in 2018 for streaming online and digital purchase. It was amongst the top 3 in Billboard’s World Albums list. D-2 was his second mix tape launched in 2020.

Career

Suga started to work at the young age of 13. He wrote music lyrics and read about MIDI. At the age of 17, he started working as a part-timer at a nearby recording studio. The journey of rapping, composing music, and performing started here.

He became an underground rapper and adopted the name Gloss. In 2010, he also joined the hip hop crew D-Town where they produced a song titled 518-062 to acknowledge the Gwangju Uprising.

The rise of BTS:

Suga joined Big Hit Entertainment as a music producer and trained for three years with RM and J-Hope. He debuted as a part of the South Korean band BTS with the number “No More Dream”, which was a part of their album 2 Cool 4 Skool. Suga has been an active member of BTS and has written and produced a number of tracks for BTS albums.

He then released a solo number named Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life. Its lyrics were a portrayal of his fears of entering adulthood. It was released as an animated video. Part two of the album featured another performance by Suga. It was named Intro: Never Mind. After that, Suga did not perform for BTS for a few years, but in 2020, he released “Interlude: Shadow” to be a part of the album Map of the Soul: 7.

The President of South Korea awarded Suga the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit for being a part of the band BTS.

Solo work:
He released a solo mix tape in 2016. He also discussed his struggles with social phobia and depression openly. The mix tape featured amongst the top 20 mix tapes of the year.

In 2017, he composed a song for Suran and named the song- Wine. The song peaked in the charts at a stable number 2 and won the best R&B/Soul track award at the Melon Music Awards in 2017. He also received the “Hot Trend Award” that year.

In 2019, he featured on Lee So-ra’s single, titled “Song Request”. The track scored number three on Gaon Digital Chart and was amongst the top two on Billboard’s Digital Songs list as it had over 3,000 downloads in the first two days. Suga also produced a track titled “Eternal Sunshine” for Epik High. He produced and wrote “We Don’t Talk Together” for Heize.

2020 saw the release of the digital single “Eight”, which Suga produced. The song topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart and the Gaon Digital Chart. His second mix tape, named D-2, was launched recently in May 2022. It is the first solo Korean release to feature in the top 10 of the UK album charts.

SUGA is well-known for writing, arranging, mixing, composing, and mastering the art. He has more than 100 registered songs in the Korea Music Copyright Association. Suga also loves to play the piano and produces R&B and hip-hop music. His lyrics are always full of hopes and dreams as he views music as his strength. In January 2018, he became a full-time member of the Korea Music Copyright Association.
