The LGBTQ+ community celebrates pride month every year, from the 1st of June to the 30th of June.

Every year June is celebrated as LGBTQ+ pride month. This month, the LGBTQ+ group celebrates the LGBTQ+ community in several ways. First, there are events and Awareness campaigns that are organized across the globe to recognize and acknowledge the influence of the LGBTQ+ community around the world.

LGBTQ+ stands for a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer person. This community encompasses all the individuals that do not assign a particular sexual orientation towards themselves and represent themselves to belong to the LGBTQ+ group.

It all started with the gay pride day, which had multiple events across cities and soon grew into a month-long series of demonstrations and events. In today’s time, these events include everything right from pride parades to workshops, concerts and parties to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community across the globe.

The sole aim of this celebration is to recognize and acknowledge individuals belonging to the LGBTQ+ community internationally, nationally and locally.

Why is June Celebrated as Pride Month?

The prime reason why June is taken to be the pride month is that it was during this month back in 1969 when the Stonewall riots took place. This riot happened early in 1969 when a raid occurred at the Stonewall inn in the Greenwich Village of Manhattan. To counteract this raid, the LGBTQ+ community organized various spontaneous and violent demonstrations to protest against the operation in their community.

The call of the protests was to establish safe places where people from the LGBTQ+ community could open up about their sexual orientation without fearing any law. The demand was to make such places available so that people from their communities would not have to fear getting arrested. These riots served as important factors that led to the successful influence of the LGBTQ+ community across the globe.

Within six months of these riots, two gay activist groups were already formed in New York. Within a year, multiple such rights organizations were formulated in the United States and globally. Brenda Howard coordinated the first pride, also referred to as the mother of pride, as she sparked the idea for events organized on pride day. These events will later be developed into annual celebrations held annually in June.
