The call of the protests was to establish safe places where people from the LGBTQ+ community could open up about their sexual orientation without fearing any law. The demand was to make such places available so that people from their communities would not have to fear getting arrested. These riots served as important factors that led to the successful influence of the LGBTQ+ community across the globe.

Within six months of these riots, two gay activist groups were already formed in New York. Within a year, multiple such rights organizations were formulated in the United States and globally. Brenda Howard coordinated the first pride, also referred to as the mother of pride, as she sparked the idea for events organized on pride day. These events will later be developed into annual celebrations held annually in June.

For example, the pink colour stands for sex, red stands for life, orange is associated with healing, Yellow signifies the sun, green for nature, turquoise reflects magic, blue stands for peace and purple for spirit.

Pride month was officially recognized in the United States in 1999 when Bill Clinton became the first U S president. However, during the presidential ship of Barack Obama from 2009 to 2016, June was declared the gay pride month.

In addition, Donald Trump, who was the last president of the United States recognized this gay pride month by tweeting that its administration has started a global campaign that would decriminalize homosexuality. The pride parade in New York is said to be one of the largest parades in the world as it witnesses over 2,000,000 people participating in it.

What are the traditions of pride month?

Pride month reminds people to accept and not feel ashamed of their sexual orientation. The rainbow signifies colours and flavours in diversity through a month-long celebration that includes parades, rallies, workshops, parties and educational programs.
